Soentoo FAQ

What is Soentoo?

Soentoo is a Gentoo-based distribution which was designed for the Soekris net4801 embedded systems. It is highly versatile in terms of configurability and tries to maintain extremely small file sizes.

Who made Soentoo?

I'm Johannes Bauer, a German college student at the "Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg", studying Computer Science. My private homepage is at http://www.johannes-bauer.com, but it's only available in German. You can reach me via eMail (I speak English and German):

What license is used for Soentoo?

Soentoo stands under the GPL, Gnu General Public License.

Where can I download Soentoo? What should I download?

You can get the latest version here. What you should download depends on what you want to do: if you first want to get started, go grab a binary image. It's best for trying everything out the first time. You can just download it, put it on a CompactFlash-Card and are ready to go with apache2, mysql, php, sshd and iptables. The binary image will definitely fit on a 128MB CompactFlash card.

If you want to customize your version, you should go for the "source" version. It's quite tiny but requires you to download additional files (like the Gentoo Stage-files, the portage snapshot and a current kernel). This gives you the opportunity to emerge own packets, or leave out any packets which are included in the binary distribution (like mysql - if you want to save space).

Is there any installation hints?

Well, currently there only is a Quick Installation Guide. It should explain pretty much everything, as it's not too hard to set up anyway.

How can I leave you some feedback?

If you'd like to leave some comments about Soentoo on this website, you can reach the guestbook here. I really appreciate any suggestions, hints or just remarks about what you like/dislike about it.

Can I see some screenshots?
